There are a number of theories on the earliest person whose surname is “Xu”. On of them suggests it is from the feudal state of Xu in present day Henan during Zhou dynasty. There are also stories that suggests it originates from the fabled Xu You, a sage in the time of the fabled Emperor Yao. Currently in Singapore, most of the surname Xu is presented as “Koh”, which is “Xu” with the pronunciation of Southern Min diaspora.
